Creating Databases with DEVONthink

Back in 2015, I created a series of articles on how to get into using DEVONthink. DEVONthink is just an absolute monster of an application on macOS that can do so much more than file management if you wish.

I use it to archive my emails, manage my paperless office, pull in RSS feeds and a lot more and despite the cost, the value I’ve pulled in from the app is amazing.

I decided to switch up the format and release a small series of videos that will help you get started if DEVONthink is something you have heard of, but never taken the plunge in trying out. The first one - Creating Databases with DEVONthink - is now available, and more will be following in due course that cover Importing and Indexing files, Backing up your Databases, Classifying documents and much more.

Control your Mac volume with your Watch using WatchControl

Damian, one of the cool people over in the Relay FM Discord servers has created a great application that allows you to control the volume on your Mac, using your Apple Watch - WatchControl.

This is a small quality of life improvement I’ve been looking for and totally the kind of thing I can get behind. I’ve tried it, it works great and is well worth checking out.

There are two elements to the process - an app that is installed on your Watch via your iPhone, then a small menu bar companion app for macOS.

Worth a look

Using CleanMyMac X

CleanMyMac X, by MacPaw is a great app for keeping your Mac lean and mean. it doesn’t just allow you to bulk delete files that are eating into your available hard drive space - you can run maintenance scripts, execute malware checks, even delete old Wi-Fi networks! It’s really useful and if you are mulling over whether or not it’s for you, check out my video on exactly what it’s capable of.

Anybox - Using the Anydock

Anybox is a great bookmarking app for Mac and iOS that doesn’t just allow you to store web-based links, but anything on your Mac that utilises a URL scheme. This offers some amazing potential use cases and although I’ve only been using it for around a month myself, it’s now firmly at the centre of my workflow and I cannot recommend the app enough.

One feature of Anybox is the Anydock, which is a floating bookmark bar that persists on your desktop and allows you quick access to a number of your links. Here, you can find a short video on how to set it up and use it.

Todoist - Habit Tracker

Recently, the team at Todoist have released some web extensions to further increase the functionality of their task management application. One of the best ones is, for me, the Habit Tracker.

Todoist can now convert a recurring task into a habit and let’s you build streaks as you complete them. It’s fool-proof, and very easy to implement so I created a short video showing you how to do it.
